A Side View of Bing-Chuan
The fighting on the competition arena is so bitterly fierce, and all the spectators are crazy with their excitement. Yet, the real martial master is not on the arena at the moment. He is waiting in the“flickering fading light”①——remaining to be himself without showing off.
Bingchuan may not be the greatest martial master, yet, he has got the prerequisite that a martial master must have——calmness. Does this calmness come from his name Leng Bingchuan②? Or is it from his personality of“watching a fire from the other side of the river”③? To be frank, I haven’t done any real research of the origin of his temper of being calm down. Perhaps, he never takes the fighting on the competition arena seriously. What he is interested in and aims at is to do something more meaningful, like people doing the moral and justice by following God’s providence. Furthermore, he is someone with real capability and skills, having solid firearms, a big and clever head, a tall body of one point eight meters’high as well. Why should he be in such a hurry? It is just unworthy for him to do the fighting which is only like the“interlude”.
When a kind of“avant-guard”art style turns to be the popular tendency, it has completed its transformation from a revolutionist to the object of revolution. At this moment, it is necessary to have a much cooler killer coming to put this“phenomenon”to an end, in order to have a new change.
I am not quite sure whether Bingchuan is such a brave warrior now, ready to come out to do the killing. Yet, at least we can see from these works that they are totally different from those stuffs of low quality being cast out in a hurry carelessly in the cultural disruption. Instead, they are the result of years’busyness in sedimentation and hard labor in silence as well as order. He firstly tries to search with his mind and heart in the pains, for the broken cultural connections like venations and nerves, and then in this desert, he puts his great effort in making them in order bit by bit and repairing them. Finally, with his real sincerity, he recreates a new art life with its history and context. The value of this kind of creation in cultural connection cannot be measured in a short period of cultural time. I believe these works soaked in Bingchuan’s blood and wisdom cannot be the“silicon gel”that replaces the fresh and lively life. Though works made of“silicon gel”may be attractive and charming at the first sight, yet, when time passes, it turns to be“dead block”with no expression and life force no matter how it is touched.
Here I cannot give a full discussion of his works one by one. I only intend to wait and see!
I have only met Bingchuan for several times, and haven’t read his works carefully. So I cannot have a whole view of his works, instead, only a side view of Bingchuan here is shown.

Notes:
①“flickering fading light”:This is a phrase from the poem The Eve of Lantern Festival made by Xin Qi-Ji, a poet in South Song Dynasty. It contains the meaning that the lover will not be bothered by other people celebrating the festival, waiting for his/her beloved in the darkened flickering light quietly.
②Leng Bing-Chuan: Here the Chinese character“Leng”means“cold”, and“Bing-Chuan”means“glacier”.
③“watching a fire from the other side of the river”: This is a phrase taken from the ancient Chinese military work Sun Zi: Fire War. The original meaning of the phrase is to be apathetic or indifferent to others’misfortune or troubles. Here, the implied meaning lies in that he/she does not care the others’dispute within themselves and does his/her own work wholeheartedly.
